Human beings change and grow naturally, just like nature. However, there are moments when life challenges us, and growth no longer feels so simple. In these cases, it’s essential to reconnect with our senses, with our heart, with our roots, and with our relationships—through trust.
Sometimes, we face situations that require us to awaken our full potential and find a way to overcome adversity. Resilience is the ability to recover from hardship. In the physical world, it’s the elasticity of a substance that returns to its original shape after being under pressure. Psychologically, it’s the strength that allows us to rebuild ourselves.
Resilience: An Innate Human Power
Imagine for a moment that every person—regardless of the circumstances—has the ability to regain balance and transform vulnerability into strength. It may sound utopian, but resilience is part of who we are.
When working with expats and refugees in therapy, we witness living examples of this process. Despite having gone through wars, illness, or loss, many of these individuals consciously choose to stop fighting life and instead learn to receive what it offers. Rather than being consumed by anger, fear, or sadness, they develop the ability to adapt and feel gratitude, finding meaning in their reality.
The same was true of the Sahrawi people I met in the refugee camps of Algeria. Despite the lack of resources, the loss of loved ones to war, and political and social discrimination, they never let go of hope. Every bit of support they received was seen as a gift.
Accepting Vulnerability to Connect with Strength
No matter the circumstances, we are never completely alone. There is always an option: to share, to ask for help, to be seen, heard, and understood.
The simple act of asking for support is already a form of healing. The key lies in accepting our vulnerability as part of our strength—allowing both aspects to collaborate instead of compete.
Many of my patients, especially expats, experience anxiety or depression because they feel they are no longer as strong, fast, or efficient as they once were. Something has hit them hard and made them question their worth. However, their extreme self-demand does not help. Instead of blaming themselves, they need to learn to be compassionate and kind with who they are now.
The Weight of Self-Criticism and the Power of Acceptance
Our inner critic is often the biggest barrier to our well-being. Since childhood, we adopt values and demands imposed by family, education, and culture—forgetting our own intuition and inner wisdom.
✔ We disconnect from our instincts.
✔ We lose trust in our judgment.
✔ We demand too much, without allowing ourselves to rest or be cared for.
Yet when someone receives affection and support, emotional wounds heal faster. Acceptance and love are essential keys in any healing process.
My work is to accompany people on this path: to consciously choose to feel better and build a commitment to their well-being. This change is possible—I see it reflected every day in therapy.
